Algoma Central CorporationAlgoma is a leading Canadian shipping company, owning and operating the largest and most diversified fleet of dry-bulk carriers and product tankers serving the special needs of customers that ship products on the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Waterway. The Algoma fleet serves industry sectors that include: steel, agriculture, construction, salt, petrochemical, and power generation. Algoma’s dry-bulk fleet includes both self-unloading and gearless bulk vessels of differing sizes and configurations, providing flexible shipping options for customers. In 2011, Algoma began construction on the Algoma Equinox, the first ship in a new class of maximum Seaway-Size self-unloading and bulk carriers. By 2018, eleven of these new vessels are expected to join the Algoma fleet, including one vessel owned by G3 Canada Limited and managed by Algoma on their behalf. The Equinox Class represents the newest and most efficient means of shipping bulk commodities on the Great Lake – St. Lawrence Waterway.
Algoma’s self-unloader fleet includes traditional hopper-hold vessels that have full Seaway-size dimensions (740’ length and 78’ beam), as well as those that have a length of 650’ and a bow-boom configuration to reach unique discharge locations at specific ports. The 650’ vessel class adds flexibility for shippers with operations at ports having vessel length restrictions. Additionally, Algoma operates Coastal Class self-unloaders, which meet the needs of customers operating outside the Great Lakes – Seaway system on the Canadian East Coast.
Algoma also provides dry bulk shipping services to shippers who do not require self-unloading technology. For more than 50 years Seaway-size gearless bulk carriers have cost effectively transported Canadian and U.S. grain harvests eastward through the St. Lawrence Seaway system, and iron ore shipments back to the Great Lakes. Algoma has added four new Equinox Class gearless bulkers to its fleet to increase efficiency and operate in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner.
Algoma’s product tanker segment serves both domestic and international markets. The domestic fleet’s primary function is to provide safe and reliable transportation services for liquid petroleum products throughout the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence Seaway and Atlantic Canada regions.

Green Marine - Alliance verteGreen Marine is celebrating its 10th year! The environmental certification program for the North American marine industry was founded October 23, 2007.
It is a voluntary, inclusive and transparent initiative that addresses key environmental issues through its 12 performance indicators. There are currently more than 110 ship owners, port authorities, Seaway corporations, terminals and shipyards in Canada and the United States participating in Green Marine. The two Seaway Corporations, in Canada and the United States, are Green Marine certified, as are more than 75 other participants within the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway System.
The initiative’s cornerstone is its far-reaching environmental program that makes it possible for any marine company to reduce its environmental footprint by undertaking concrete and measurable actions. Green Marine’s program offers a detailed framework for maritime companies to first establish and then reduce their environmental footprint.
To receive their certification, participants must benchmark their annual environmental performance through the program’s comprehensive self-evaluation guides, have the results verified by an accredited external verifier, and agree to the publication of their individual results.
Continuous improvement
Participants must also demonstrate year-over-year improvement in measurable ways to maintain their Green Marine certification. Green Marine’s environmental program continues to demonstrate its ability to inspire participants to exceed regulatory requirements and to continue to challenge themselves to do even better every year. Environmental performance results have steadily improved since Green Marine’s first year of reporting in 2008.
The results convey a participant’s ranking for each applicable performance indicator on a 1-to-5 scale. Level 1 constitutes the monitoring of regulations, while Level 5 reflects leadership and excellence.
A pivotal element of Green Marine’s success from the outset has been the active support from environmental stakeholders and governments. Green Marine supporters encourage and bolster the sustainable development initiatives undertaken by the participating maritime enterprises. The supporters endorse and help to shape and review the environmental program, most notably through Green Marine’s advisory committees. The program has three of these committees organized by geographical regions: the St. Lawrence, the Great Lakes, and the West Coast.
